September 23, 2006 - The Indian Chamber of Commerce New York recently held their First Annual Diwali Gala Dinner Dance at the Akbar Restaurant in Garden City. Over 250 friends of the Chamber attended and enjoyed traditional Indian fare, friendship, participated in networking and danced the night away.
Professionals from all walks of life belong to the Chamber which sets standards of excellence in member service, community collaboration, business growth and achieving a high quality of life in the communities that members live in. This special night was no exception to the high standards set by the Chamber Board and members.
Highlights of the evening included the honoring of Nassau County District Attorney, Kathleen Rice, who is also raising the standard in law enforcement and to building greater relationships with the Indian community, including activism to encourage and foster a growing bond between the District Attorney's office and the Indian community.
Greater communication and listening will be a part of her effort to keep communities informed as she looks to keep neighborhoods and families safe.
The food, service and decorations were stunning. The banquet room at Akbar was transformed into an upscale night club with live performances by recording artist Gayatri, from Connecticut. Gayatri sang and danced along with the guests, who wanted the party to go on all night. The speak for themselves.
Danielle Reed, daughter of Jim Reed, Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Affairs for Nassau County, first sang "New York, New York" in praise of DA Rice's great talents and a perception by many that Ms. Rice will go far in this world, and certainly beyond New York's boundaries. The
biggest surprise of the evening was near the end of this wonderful evening when Ms. Reed took center stage to once again perform, and to everyone's surprise, the energetic strains of "Chura Liya" came to life and she began singing in Hindi with perfect pronunciation and execution
to be joined mid-song by Chamber President, Billy Singh, who has wowed the crowds on other occasions as a singer. Members can't wait until next year for another amazingly great time!
